About

bearable is barely enough

Do you know why MegaUpload was busted by the FBI? It was not because they were infringing copyright. It was also not because they were costing the music, film and publishing industries a lot of money. It was also not because stealing is wrong. After all, the music, film and publishing industry steal from artists and writers every day. It wasn’t even because the creators of MegaUpload were about to start a service that would allow consumers to buy music directly from the artists. Such a service would in fact give the money earned through music to the actual musicians – shocking, I know – and not to an out-dated distribution network that steals 80% of the earnings from the people who should actually get it. Who could be against such a service anyway, well, who apart from the music industry? Still, this was also not the reason why they shut down MegaUpload. I will tell you the truth now and you will probably not even believe me. They shut the service down, because we teddy bears were trying to start a revolution. MegaUpload was essential to our operation. Now you know it.

By the way, I’m Ted. Yeah, Ted, the teddy bear. I know, stupid name, but after all I didn’t choose it. No bear does. Thousands of bears have my face and my name is as generic as it gets. In other words, I’m staying anonymous. It’s better that way, since I’m a rebel, who fights for the freedom of the teddy bears. I’m sure that as soon as you know my story you will probably want me out of the way too, just like the FBI. Nobody wants the truth to get out, really. However, you can’t shut us up forever.

What, you don’t believe me? Freedom for teddy bears? A teddy bear revolution? Ludicrous you say? Well, wait until you read my story and then you can decide whether you believe it or not.

Since my paws are not really made for handling keyboards, my friend Lilly is writing my story down at the moment. I hope she doesn’t get into trouble for helping me …

Ted

Since the government has been making a big deal of trying to suppress the real reason for taking down MegaUpload, I had to put this project off until it all quiets down a bit. They even came past to take Ted (his name was changed for his protection) into custody recently, but he successfully hid in my sock drawer. It was all pretty spooky, since they pretended to be Italian speaking Jehovah’s witnesses. Ted and me are absolutely sure that they were undercover operatives though. It was so obvious! I mean, Italian speaking Jehovah’s witnesses in Berlin? Who comes up with this shit?

So, I guess this has turned into a blog about a novel I’m not writing. As you can see in the progress bar on the right, I’m working hard on another top secret project though, also a novel. Once I’m through with writing and editing I will reveal what it’s all about and then you can follow my efforts in getting it out there. It’s all pretty exciting, since it’s the first time I’ve been managing to get so far with a writing project.

Watch this space!

  1. I’m about 40k words right now on a YA novel. Should be about 70k when I’m done. I’ve started two other novels which I never finished. What I’ve found with this one is that I don’t go back and edit myself. I just keep trudging forward and making progress. Get the story out – plot, main characters, story arc. Then when the first draft is done go back and tinker with description, dialogue, etc… Anyways, that’s my two cents. Good luck!

Well done on having made it to 40k, that’s great! It means that you’re already halfway there, keep going and good luck 🙂
Editing myself while still on the first draft is also something that I don’t do anymore. I know that at least 60% of what I write will not survive in the way it is written now, but it’s important to get the story out first so that you actually see what it is like. The only thing where I allow myself to edit is the voice though. Sometimes I just have an off day and end up in a completely different style from other days. When I’m back to my normal self I then go through what I have written and adapt the voice. If you don’t keep the voice coherent editing becomes a nightmare. At least that’s my experience from short stories. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
